A place of beauty, history and medical need. Shell is located in the eastern foothills of the Andes mountains approximately 100 miles south of Quito. Originally names from the Royal Dutch Shell Company, a sister town of Mera is often mentioned in the same reference.
Around 1948, the Mission Aviation Fellowship was located around Shell and it became one of the most important jumping off spots for the entire eastern jungle area of Ecuador where many towns were not accessible by road. MAF continues to operate out of Shell even today. In January 1956, the area became world famous due to the disappearance and murder of 5 missionaries including pilot Nate Saint and Jim Elliot. This rich history and story has changed the area forever as the influence of the missionaries taught revenge filled Indian tribes how to forgive and changed generations of revenge killings.
In 1958, the Hospital Vozandes del Oriente opened its doors as the first hospital in that region of Ecuador.
